Co-founder of Carlotta Films, Vincent Paul-Boncour presents two books: Une expérience américaine du chaos, Massacre à la tronçonneuse (‘An American Experience of Chaos: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’), and L'Âge d'or du cinéma japonais 1935-1975 (‘The Golden Age of Japanese Cinema 1935–1975’).
What do books contribute to film culture?
They are indispensable resources for all the opportunities they present in terms of discussing cinema, whether in movie theatres or on television. It allows us to expand our passion for the 7th Art based on everything that already exists about the medium, and to analyse the films or the careers of filmmakers. It also allows us to learn through the written format, to continue to pass on our knowledge of cinema.
What is the wildest and most complex publication you have done?
First, there is the collection of cinema ‘bibles’, which we launched with the Yasujirō Ozu notebooks. With this approach, we invite readers to join us, releasing one or two books a year. Another notable book is Golden Eighties, published in 2024, which explores the era by presenting one movie for each year and its relationship with the box office. It’s an incredible œuvre, which required more than 10 years of research, with analytical and historical work on the cinema of this period and covering all the professions involved in filmmaking. The project was not easy to pitch, since it seemed academic, but it ultimately reads like a novel and was highly appreciated upon its release, both by professionals and film enthusiasts.
What is a publication you dream of doing ?
It's the one we'll do 'tomorrow', but we don't know which one yet! We don't really have a ‘dream publication’, in the sense that we take on projects one by one, the same approach as with theatrical distribution. We feel joy and satisfaction at the thought of the next book. Being content with what we do as we go along... Just like life in general!
