Every day there is a little-known filmmaker and a film to rediscover; doing justice to those forgotten in the history of cinema is also the role of the Lumière film festival.

JARDIN QUI BASCULE 1974 01Le Jardin qui bascule, 1975

Who is he ?

Screenwriter and director Guy Gilles (1938-1996) is the auteur behind a multi-faceted, sensitive body of work made up of short films, documentaries and works for television, as well as eight melodic films where acting plays a crucial part.

His film at the Lumière film festival ?

Le Jardin qui bascule tells the mysterious story of a young man hired to kill a free-spirited and emotionally liberated woman named Kate.

Why is it worth discovering ?

Le Jardin qui bascule is resolutely poetic and powerful. With Delphine Seyrig in the role of the uncontrollable Kate, it recounts the story of an encounter between a young man who ultimately knows very little about life and an observant woman, free in body and spirit. Guy Gilles delivers a disconcerting work, both social and political, in which the thriller aspect is only secondary. What's important here is how a woman reveals who she is, how she reads what she can get her hands on, how she goes for a walk, or how she enters into a romantic relationship, while retaining the power to decide for herself without being judged. Gilles also shows how dangerous it is for a woman to want to fully enjoy her independence.
