A discussion with Xavier Dolan and the two stars of Mommy, Anne Dorval and Antoine-Olivier Pilon.

Xavier Dolan : How can you make a film without friendship? It's so inseparable from passion and emotion... If I like something or a scene, I shout and jump for joy. Anne taught me a lot of things: notions of rhythm, dialogue... I've always surrounded myself with people I admire. That's key for me.
Anne Dorval : I remember Xavier's happiness and exaltation during the filming. We knew we were living something exceptional. I've known Xavier since he was very young, and he always wants to do better. It's good to spend your life trying to achieve that perfection. That's why I love him.
Antoine Olivier Pilon : I was very excited at the idea of being this character who was the opposite of everything I'd played up till then. What I really liked was when Xavier would come up to us and whisper in our ear to explain how to portray the depth of the scene.

AD : Just yesterday, signing the book A Friendship Through Film about the shooting of Mommy, I saw people trembling as they introduced themselves and I was overwhelmed that 10 years later people had tears in their eyes and wanted to take a photo with us. There’s a tacit understanding between us, and that's the beauty of it.
XD : I'm really looking forward to this anniversary screening. Mommy was shot on analogue film in 35mm. And we had to reprint it on film to show it in 35 mm. The idea of going back to film with Mommy was to return it to its original format but also to preserve the film.
