Recently orphaned, young Letty (Lillian Gish) leaves Virginia and finds refuge with her cousin. However, she is soon tormented by the reigning hostile atmosphere, compounded by the relentless wind... Adapted from a novel by Dorothy Scarborough by screenwriter Frances Marion and the Swedish filmmaker for MGM, this marvel from the twilight of the silent era blends Hollywood conventions with Scandinavian naturalism, resulting in a sublime synthesis of the filmmaker's œuvre.
Restored in 4K by MoMA, with support from the Lillian Gish Trust for Film Preservation. Music composed by Carl Davis, adapted and conducted by Timothy Brock, performed by the National Orchestra of Lyon.

The Phantom Carriage (1921)
accompanied on the organ by Grégoire Rolland
Prices: 17€ / 15€ (accredited members)
According to popular legend, the last sinner who dies during the year must drive the phantom carriage into the following year, tasked with carrying the souls of the dead on their final journey. David Holm (Victor Sjöström), a crude drunkard, dies at the stroke of midnight… This moral tale, rich with fantastical overtones, was adapted from the novel by Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf (Nobel Prize in Literature). Deftly weaving together flashbacks, superimpositions and parallel actions, it is a bold virtuoso work, which the Auditorium’s 6,400-pipe organ will enhance with its power, its hues and its mystery.
Restored in 2K by the Swedish Film Institute
