Students at the Lumière Film Festival

The Lumière Film Festival has become an unmissable event of the festive cinema experience. It also welcomes a myriad of national and international personalities.
Every year, 5,000 students participate in the festival!

From Saturday the 12th to Sunday the 20th of October 2024, the 16th edition of the Lumière Film Festival will be held in some forty movie theatres and entertainment venues in Lyon and its metropolitan area. The venues are eager to be a part of this great fête, which will be even grander this year as it celebrates the 15th anniversary of its existence.

All year round, passing on cinema heritage to young audiences is the main mission of the Lumière educational department, and a priority for the festival.
Every year, over 5,000 students attend screenings of films, which are introduced by artists who come to share their passion for the 7th art. The festival features retrospectives, tributes, restored prints, rereleases of forgotten films, encounters and discussions with filmmakers, actors and authors...

There are several options to choose from:

1 / Students at the festival
Attend a screening of the festival programme (from primary school students to highschoolers)

During the Lumière Film Festival, there are two screenings reserved for schoolchildren: one for primary school pupils and another for middle schools students. In addition to these events, any film of the festival lineup can be adapted to your class.

‘Pass Région’ and ‘Pass Culture’ accepted
The trip by bus is coordinated by a programme thanks to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region.
A special rate of €4 (instead of €6) is available for schoolchildren.

In September, as soon as the festival programme is released, your personal representative, Fanny Bolac,
will contact you directly to prepare a selection of screenings.

2 / Hold a cinema workshop during the Lumière Film Festival!

Primary schools, middle schools or media libraries in Lyon and its metropolitan area can also arrange to hold a film workshop during the festival. For one or more activities between Monday the 14th and Saturday the 19th of October (morning or afternoon session), our expert guides will come meet your students or young readers to share the History and techniques of cinema with them.

Discover all the secrets behind the creation of a film festival!

Starting with the nature and inner-workings of the Lumière Film Festival, students will discover what goes on behind the scenes. How is it organised? How are the guests chosen and welcomed? How are the films selected? How does the festival communicate with the media?
Questions like these will provide insight into major film festivals like Lumière, Cannes and Venice, for example.

The giants of comedy!

Discover the great geniuses of burlesque cinema.

In this fun and historical workshop, children will learn that the cinema of yesteryear was silent… and in black and white! And yet those early flicks were just as clever, entertaining and effective as they are today. In a series of selected movie clips with commentary, they’ll witness iconic moments of films starring  ‘geniuses of laughter’ like Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, Buster Keaton and Jerry Lewis.

Discover the tips and tricks of directing.

Today, children are immersed in a world of images… In this workshop, they’ll play a series of observation games to learn all about how a director conveys a message or an emotion: a kids’ introduction to the key techniques of filmmaking.

4 / The High School Prize, 11th edition

The High School Prize is supported by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, which allows 6,000 students to attend the Lumière festival annually. Created in 2014, the first edition resulted in a tie between Pedro Almodóvar’s  High Heels and It's a Wonderful Life by Frank Capra. They Were Five by Julien Duvivier was awarded in 2015, followed by Sherlock Jr. by Buster Keaton in 2016, Chungking Express by Wong Kar-wai in 2017, The Kid by Charlie Chaplin in 2018, The Outsiders by Francis Ford Coppola in 2019. Two years later, Sweetie by Jane Campion and The 400 Blows by François Truffaut tied for first place, while Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow won the Prize in 2022.
The 2023 High School Prize was attributed to Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson. The prize is presented during the Closing Ceremony of the Lumière Film Festival at the Halle Tony Garnier before an audience of 5,000.
