Première, 50 Years of Cinema
POSTED ON 17.10.2026
Journey to the heart of a cinema magazine!
50 years in the special-interest press is no small feat, but monthly review PREMIÈRE has achieved just that. The publication of the founding issue in November of 1976 took place half a century ago! Taking a tour at this exhibition is like going back in time, revisiting visual trends and reminiscing about certain artists, culminating in a totally captivating artistic experience.
From a marketing perspective, it’s fun to see how logos, including those from the 1990s, were visual precursors to today’s vintage-style graphics like for series Stranger Things. Visitors of a certain age can indulge in a touch of nostalgia as they recall the eagerly-awaited issues of PREMIÈRE they devoured each month, which evolved over decades with brand new typefaces and various formats.
As far as editorial content goes, the front pages reflect the passage of time yet immoralize the celebrities forever. It’s both moving and enlightening to see major figures of French cinema on the front page, from the legendary Lino Ventura to the more low-key actor Claude Brasseur. The gallery also includes international stars like enigmatic and much-regretted David Lynch, iconic director Steven Spielberg or the incomparable actress Isabelle Huppert, along with a few quirky, memorable artists like Björk…
Later in the exhibit, we are swept up into the heart of the media adventure, which continues publication today! The editorial staff, from one team to the next, has kept cinema at its very core. Every month, it’s the same question: “Who will grace the cover this month?”
