Before being acquired and operated by the Institut Lumière, Lumière Bellecour was part of the Cinéma National Populaire network, better known by its acronym CNP. From 1983, the year it opened, until 2014, the cinema was therefore known as CNP Bellecour.

To make the Bellecour cinema attractive again, it needed to be completely refurbished. Of all the recently renovated cinemas in the Cinémas Lumière network, this venue required the largest investment. Previously, audiences had to wait outside under an awning; they can now enjoy the comfort of the cinema’s spacious entrance hall. The screening rooms have been fully renovated and redecorated and are now air-conditioned. Renamed Lumière Bellecour, the cinema now offers all the comfort audiences can expect from a modern movie theatre.

The programming, however, remains true to the venue’s original identity. Lumière Bellecour continues to screen arthouse films for discerning audiences eager to discover a different kind of cinema, open to the world.
