On the occasion of the 15 editions gone by of the festival, filmmaker Costa-Gavras will be Lumière’s guest of honour at the opening ceremony. The auteur of a multitude of politically engaged films and president of the Cinémathèque française, he will be celebrated for his essential œuvre, which has impacted entire generations. Costa-Gavras' filmography echoes the history of a tormented century. Born in Greece in 1933, his films bear witness to a chaotic world. From the rise of totalitarianism to the current crises, from the collapse of communism to the excesses of globalised capitalism, Costa-Gavras's works tackle the political turmoil of past and present. A director still hard at work, he continues to make films and will be premiering his new feature Last Breath. Moreover, his political cinema is the focus of a series by Edwy Plenel, called The Costa-Gavras Century. Three episodes will be revealed at the Lumière Film Festival. Celebrations, a master class, film screenings... long live Costa-Gavras!
