Invitation to Giuseppe Tornatore

It was perhaps for Cinema Paradiso, at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival, that the expression ‘Palme of the heart’ was coined, so deeply did this remembrance of  a childhood in the cinema touch the public. It even took home the Academy Award for Best Foreign Picture. Since then, maestro Tornatore has been alternating between fiction films and documentaries, evoking his country in Everybody’s Fine, and celebrating a national treasure, Ennio... Morricone, of course.

Giuseppe Tornatore

He is a leading figure in Italian cinema who has won multiple awards, including an Oscar and the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Giuseppe Tornatore will be one of our guests of honour at Lumière 2024.

It remains true that his name will forever be dissociable from his phenomenal success, Cinema Paradiso, an instant classic that, over the years, has become a beloved film among cinema lovers. Yet his œuvre abounds with both Italian and international gems, like Everybody’s Fine, which follows the journey of a character in the twilight of his life (Mastroianni), who sets off on a road trip of Italy to see his children.

In a career, that spans forty years, Tornatore has directed Tim Roth, Philippe Noiret, Marcello Mastroianni (in his final role), Monica Bellucci, Ben Gazzara,  as well as Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess and Donald Sutherland.

His collaboration with the legendary Ennio Morricone (whose lullabies for Cinema Paradiso have cradled generations) led to the creation of this documentary-event, met with rave reviews by the press.

It is with joy and anticipation that we await his arrival in Lyon. Here is his programme!
