in a restored print

The emotion we felt upon hearing the news of his recent death was profound, serving as a startling reminder that cinema still plays an integral part of our lives. To pay homage to the star and enable audiences to see him again on the big screen of the Halle Tony Garnier, the Lumière Film Festival is dedicating its Closing Ceremony to Alain Delon.

For the event, we have chosen to feature a film and a director he adored: the masterpiece Purple Noon by René Clément, adapted from the Ripley book series penned by Patricia Highsmith. The movie will be shown on the giant screen in a superb restored print, offering all of us, along with the special guests in attendance, a unique opportunity to remember Delon and his co-stars Maurice Ronet and Marie Laforêt.

ABOUT THE FILM

Purple Noon by René Clément (1960, 1h56)

Starring Alain Delon, Maurice Ronet and Marie Laforêt. Screenplay by René Clément and Paul Gégauff, based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith. Cinematography by Henri Decae. Music by Nino Rota.

cloture3Plein soleil is a crime film in the truest sense of the word. Clément accomplishes this result thanks to his natural propensity for esotericism, thanks to the effects of his directing – insisting on the unconventional use of strong colours à la Hitchcock - and finally, thanks to the ingenuity of the script. All together, these factors provoke a sensation of delicious uneasiness, which is only slightly disrupted by the final climax.”
Luc Moullet (Cahiers du cinéma, 1960)

Mesmerising, magnetic, ambiguous, luminous - the art of Delon is captured in Purple Noon.

Tom Ripley is tasked by Philippe's parents to bring their son back to France after the latter’s escapade to Italy. When the two friends meet near Naples, Philippe refuses to return and his girlfriend adopts a hostile view towards Tom's presence... An extraordinary, masterfully made, disquieting film, led by three actors at the top of their game. Today, Purple Noon stands as a great classic of French cinema. The feature has influenced other directors, inspiring Anthony Minghella, for example, to film a new version of The Talented Mr. Ripley in 1999 - and this year, Steve Zaillian has resuscitated Highsmith's notorious protagonist for Ripley, a limited series.
