Her career encompasses an immense part of the history of contemporary cinema. She has collaborated with auteurs from all corners of the world, from preeminent French filmmakers to leading figures in European cinema, from Asian new wave artists to American independent directors. Her filmography, of unique scope and impact, is admired by the likes of Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Sean Penn and Natalie Portman. She is a global actress who dazzles both on the big screen and on stage, who lends herself to the lenses of photography and fashion, and who has won the most prestigious international film prizes, including two Best Actress awards at the Cannes Film Festival, where she served as President of the Jury in 2009.
The Lumière Award 2024 will be presented to Isabelle Huppert.
"It's a great honour for me to receive the Lumière Award. The award is magnificent, as is its festival. And it's an award that bears the name of the inventors of cinema! Receiving it is a joy and a source of pride” the actress declared to the festival organisers.
Isabelle Huppert is among the most famous and celebrated French actresses in the world. The young leading lady with the delectable features of The Lacemaker has made a name for herself with some of her country's greatest filmmakers: Claude Chabrol, who made seven features with her, notably Violette and Story of Women, Jean-Luc Godard, Claire Denis, Bertrand Tavernier, Diane Kurys, Maurice Pialat, Catherine Breillat, Michel Deville, François Ozon and André Téchiné. A keen admirer of the great European auteurs, she has also worked with Joseph Losey, Marco Ferreri and Michael Haneke, who gave her the pivotal title role in The Piano Teacher, and in 2016 with Paul Verhoeven, for whom she starred in the thriller Elle, which earned her an Oscar nomination. From the start of her career, her insatiable curiosity and taste for singular experiences have taken her to the United States, where she appeared in Michael Cimino's legendary Heaven's Gate (1980), and more recently to the Philippines and South Korea, where she acted under the direction of Brillante Mendoza and Hong Sang-soo. Capable of moving from a sophisticated comedy to a demanding auteur film, she never stops filming, turning each of her characters into a singular enigma that she enriches with her genuineness and irony.
Isabelle Huppert will receive the Lumière Award on Friday, October 18th, 2024.
She will succeed Wim Wenders, who received the award in October 2023. See the list of all previous honourees here.
The Lumière Award was created by Thierry Frémaux to celebrate a personality for an entire body of work and his or her link with the history of cinema. Over the years, it has become one of the most prestigious awards recognised by the profession and the international press.
