Jonathan Zimmerman (Bruno Ganz), a modest picture framer, lives in Hamburg with his wife and son. Terminally ill, his time is already running out. One day, a Frenchman (Gérard Blain) arrives and proposes that Jonathan execute a man in France for the sum of 250,000 marks. But who is this man and how did he know that Jonathan was ill? The worried framer wonders about his recent meeting with Tom Ripley (Dennis Hopper), an art dealer who travels back and forth between New York and Hamburg.
